The word 'Zion' itself comes from the Bible, the term Israel comes from the Bible, the colour of our flag, parts of our national anthem all from Biblical history.
Herzl did not wake up one day and create a whole new line of thinking, he was dipping into a pool that had been thousands of years in the making and only remodelled a very old idea.
Herzl's granfather used to learn in the Yeshiva of Rav Alkalay, the first person in the modern era who truly espoused the return of the Jews to a modern nation state. We know for sure that Herzl was close with his grandfather, his writings are replete with mentions. So we can make a very small leap to the fact that Herzl's 'secular' Zionism was supped very much from the Biblical plate.
Even the agnostic Ben Gurion and his contemparies knew the Bible of by heart and after a day toiling in the fields used to learn the Bible for an hour or two as inspiration. Today's Israelis could receive the same inspiration, not so much as a religious text, but as a foundation of peoplehood and history.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
